Stadia, how does it work?
Stadia is cloud gaming, the next revolution in the world of video games. As the name implies, this service goes through the cloud, the gigantic intangible world server on which we transfer and store our data. Applied to video games, the cloud can get rid of the console and games to download. The console is the cloud.
In the case of Stadia, it is Google that operates everything thanks to its servers. The player simply needs to connect to these servers. Result, Stadia arrives with a tempting promise: play freely as there is more console and son but also on any screen, simply with an account and a subscription.
What is the material needed?
The Stadia app will be available on PCs, on TVs equipped with a Chromecast box and on Google smartphones (Pixel 3, 3a and 3a XL). But in reality, it can be accessed from any device using the Google Chrome browser. Finally almost: smartphones other than those of Google will not be compatible. With such a restriction, Stadia’s portability takes a hit.
Another constraint, quite logical that one: it is imperative to play with a controller or a keyboard. In this, Stadia is a console. A priori, all current controllers will be compatible, including those of the Xbox and the Playstation. But Google still chose to launch its own gamepad, quite classic in its form and available in three colors. It will have some peculiarities, including a button to access the voice assistant of Google and another to stream live his part.
How much does it cost ?
There will be two subscription packages to Stadia. First, a basic formula with free subscription but it will pay all games and the quality of the image will be limited to 1080p. And then there will be the option Stadia Pro, at 9.99 euros per month. At this price, you will enjoy new free games and specials every month, in addition to pay games, and a display in 4K ultra HD. Google has also introduced a formula called Stadia Founders, available for pre-order. For 129 euros, it offers three months of subscriptions to Stadia Pro for oneself and for a second person, a Stadia controller, a Chromecast Ultra box and the Destiny 2 game.
The free formula seems ideal for testing how Stadia works. In the long run, it may also be suitable for intermittent players who do not want to engage in time. As for the pay option, a sort of Netflix video game, it should seduce more seasoned gamers.
Can we really play anywhere?
Technically yes, it’s the very principle of Stadia. The reality is a little more complex since the sine qua non to play Google is to have a good Internet connection. Google says it will be possible to play games with a minimum speed of 10 Mbit / s, which corresponds to a connection via ADSL. For an ideal display level, however, it will be necessary to go up to 35 Mbit / s. Between the two, the quality will increase according to the connection.
